The stadium’s history
Anfield stadium opened in 1884. The land initially belonged to John Orrell, who allowed it to be used for football matches for a small fee. A football pitch was laid out on the leased land, and the first match took place on 28 September 1884, between Everton and Earlestown. Everton won 5-0.
Anfield was Everton’s home ground from 1884 to 1892. For the convenience of the fans, stands were built to hold 8,000 spectators. However, this was often too small, as matches sometimes attracted over 20,000 fans. Everton FC was growing fast and had become a league champion.
In 1891, John Houlding bought the land where the stadium was located and decided to increase the rent. As a result of the dispute, Everton FC moved to Goodison Park, leaving the new owner with an empty stadium. That’s when Houlding decided to create a new football club to keep the stadium in use. Liverpool FC was formed in March 1892, and a few months later, the first match was played against Rotherham Town. About 200 spectators watched as Liverpool won.
In 1895, a new stand was built that could hold 3,000 spectators. Its architect was Archibald Leitch. In 1903, another stand was built at the stadium for the comfort of the fans.
Developing the stadium: For comfort and convenience
Gradually, the number of matches at Anfield started to increase, and it was decided to redesign an existing stand to hold 30,000 seats. A roof was also installed over the seating.
In 1957, lighting was installed at the stadium. With each passing year, Anfield was improved and became better and better for players and football fans alike. The stadium has undergone many renovations. In 2002, Liverpool FC was offered a new stadium to move to. But instead of moving, they decided to expand Anfield. The renovation started in December 2014 and lasted until 2016.
As a result of all the renovations and redesigns, the stadium now has four stands: the Spion Kop, the Main Stand, the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand, and the Anfield Road End. The stadium also has two gates named after former Liverpool managers, Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley. Monuments dedicated to these managers are also located near the stadium.
Anfield can now hold over 53,000 spectators and is considered one of England’s largest stadiums. A record was set in 1952 when almost 62,000 people attended a match between Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
